Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) stands by his efforts to work with the White House and close the Guantanamo Bay prison.

"I'm getting a lot of grief," he said on CBS's Face The Nation. "But I will stand by my president to make rational detainee policy."

Graham wants the White House to move the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other alleged 9/11 plotters from civilian courts into a revamped military commissions.

In exchange, the administration hopes Graham will help win Republican backing to close Gitmo - a campaign promise of President Barack Obama.

Graham said his effort would require support from former Bush administration officials and Gen. David Petraeus. head of the U.S. Central Command.

"With that kind of help that will reassure Americans," Graham said, "We can do the kinds of things we need to do."
